Facts Matter

The Washington Post has a piece up that looks back at a controversial photo it published last November. The image, of a Palestinian man allegedly holding the body of his child, originally carried a caption indicating the boy had been killed by an Israeli airstrike. After an investigation, a United Nations commission has determined the boy was most likely killed...

Shooting in Extreme Conditions Webinar

On April 2, you can join former Combat Photographer Stacy Pearsall for an online webinar on Shooting in Extreme Conditions. It is free, but there are a limited number of seats available for this. I would love to say Pearsall is one of my former students, but I'm pretty sure I just stood at the front of the classroom and...

To Press Pass or Not to Press Pass

That, it would seem, is the new question. Elliot Spagat at the Orange County Register has a story about how the San Diego police chief is issuing, or not issuing, press passes to some members of the “media.” There are several questions that need to be answered here, the first of which is should journalists even be issued media credentials...

Time to Check Your Time

So, did you update the clocks in your camera this morning? Most manufacturers have software that will do this for you, which may seem more complex than just digging into your menus and setting it. The advantage comes if you have more than one camera – by picking up the time from your computer, you can keep them in sync,...

On Depth of Field, Separation and Bokeh

It’s a classic post topic – let’s argue about some small, mechanical aspect of photography, which will get everyone riled up and generate lots of traffic. Even better if we take some shortcuts in the initial post, giving us the opportunity to craft a second one, generating even more comment traffic. I just didn’t think The New York Times’ David...

Florence Thompson Never Lost Hope

You may or may not recognize the name, but once you see her face, you’ll remember. I’m not seeing a date on this, but I’d guess this Bob Dotson piece was done in the 1980s. Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy (Thanks to Slaid Cleaves for the link, who has nothing to do with...

Grady College’s Bluejeans Workshop – March 23

If you’re anywhere near Athens on Saturday, March 23, get yourself over to Grady College for the annual Bluejeans Workshop. It runs from 8:30 to 4:30 and it’s cheap – just $35 for the whole day, and that includes lunch. (Price goes up after March 18.) It opens with a panel discussion that has been phenomenally good in the past,...

Oakland Becoming Unsafe for Journalists

Carol Pogash at The New York Times has a story up on the increasing number of robberies targeting working journalists. This is a scary trend, and oddly focused just on the Oakland area. It’s sad when photojournalists report their solution is to shoot faster and not stay in an area for more than five minutes. Sad, but probably safe.
