If It’s There, It’s There

The Charleston (W.V.) Gazette has informed its readers that one of their photojournalists altered a front-page image. Good for the paper to own up to it immediately, but really? There was nothing wrong with the original photo … shoot around it or own it, but don’t alter it.

An iPhone Light Meter?

This has intrigued me … though if it could record flash exposures, that would be way more valuable.

White House Wedding

Over at The New York Times, Mark Lander has a story about the ongoing debate between the press and the White House over visual access to the president. The news hook for this story seems lad little weak – the president’s photographer, Pete Souza, was recently married in the Rose Garden. Still, the limited access needs to be rectified. “The...

Gear Week: Accessorize

Throughout the week, I’m writing a series of posts about buying gear. As we near the end of the semester with graduations and holidays approaching, the number of questions I get from students about putting together a kit skyrockets. So, now you have your camera, lenses and strobes all picked out. You’re almost ready to head out on your first...

Presidents and the Press Photographers

Really nicely curated photo gallery by Dennis Brack over at Politico that looks at the relationships between news photographers and presidents. The cutlines reveal some surprising information on who had warm relationships and who had icy ones.

Gear Week: Strobes

Throughout the week, I’m writing a series of posts about buying gear. As we near the end of the semester with graduations and holidays approaching, the number of questions I get from students about putting together a kit skyrockets. It is the bane of almost every young photographer and many seasoned ones – what to do with the dark. With...

Gear Week: Camera Bodies

Throughout the week, I’m writing a series of posts about buying gear. As we near the end of the semester with graduations and holidays approaching, the number of questions I get from students about putting together a kit skyrockets. Just a few more posts to get through this week – strobes will be tomorrow and random accessories on Saturday. But...

Giving Thanks

There are many holidays to celebrate, but today is by far my favorite. It is the day of the year we gather and celebrate what we have, not what we want. We revel in what has been, not what could have been. I am thankful for my family who have been with me through some rough years. I am thankful...

Gear Week: Lenses

Throughout the week, I’m writing a series of posts about buying gear. As we near the end of the semester with graduations and holidays approaching, the number of questions I get from students about putting together a kit skyrockets. I have always held that you put your money into glass. In the film era, there were two ways to improve...

On Unpaid Internships

Over at The New York Times, David Carr takes on the issue of unpaid internships in media organizations. Is this a big deal? Yes. These internships are by their very nature discriminatory. Only a certain kind of young person can afford to spend a summer working for no pay. According to sources at the major publishers, more than one in...
