UGA Motorsports Workshop Wrap-up

It has been nearly two weeks since my world went very, very quiet. My hearing has recovered and the memories are still pleasant, seems like a good time to talk a bit about the UGA Motorsports Photojournalism Workshop. This is an insane idea, to be honest: Take one class full of college students to one of the premier motorsports events...

Forever Young Happy Meal Story Smells Funny

Most everyone has now seen the photos or a version of the never-molding Happy Meal story. It’s a funny story, a tragic story – an informative story, too – as photographer Sally Davies shot a McDonald’s Happy Meal over a six month period and saw almost no change in it. Love this graf: The kids in that third...

On Being a Wire Service Shooter

This is a subject that is near and dear to my heart, much Iike that middle school sweetheart who went off to great fame as part of the prom court at the reform school they ended up in … So much hope, and they amounted to something, just not what you expected. Brian Ach, a stringer for Wireimage, has a...

Just in Time for the Holidays …

Okay, even I think this is excessive … a Leica M9 and 35 mm Summicron lens have been inclided in the Nieman Marcus Christmas Book. At $7,000 for the body and $3,000 for the lens, I think it’s overpriced. But at $17,500 for the body and lens … well, that’s just insane. Even if it does come with brown ostrich...

Going Vertical

One of the common complaints still photographers make when moving over to video is the forced-horizontality of traditional video players. Looks like some folks have gotten together over on Vimeo to create Tallscreen – a group of vertical videos. Will it catch on? Who knows … but it’s a fun idea.
