Avoiding Mistakes

The amount of admiration I have for Joe McNally knows no bounds. And, if it did, he pushes on them constantly … this is a must read for every student of mine: The mistakes to avoid in photography. There will be a quiz, study hard. (Though, for the record, I prefer the term “sneaker zoom” from my friend Woody Marshall.)

“I Want to Buy a Rangefinder”

These you script-we animate things are a riot … here’s one on buying a rangefinder. “It is traditional and not to be questioned.” Ha!

What Your Camera Says About You

Gordon Lewis over at Shutterfinger put up a post on what he thinks your camera make says about you. You could take it as snarky, but, man … it is so mild. Being much snarkier would be a breeze … For the record, I currently own Canon, Nikon, Pentax and Sony cameras (just a point-and-shoot on the latter). I have...

Red & Black Wins National Pacemaker Award

The student paper here at the University of Georgia, the Red & Black, picked up one of the top awards for college newspapers over the weekend, the Pacemaker Award from the Associated Collegiate Press. I Should Have Gone …

… but I didn’t. The opportunity existed, but I didn’t grasp it … How many times have we said these things to ourselves? For me, it’s reading about the Online News Association’s annual conference which was last week. There were tweets-a-plenty to remind me of my folly. The best round up comes from the Poynter Institute’s Mallary Jean Tenore who...

Ansel Adams, Street Shooter

No lie … NPR has a gallery of images Ansel Adams donated to the Los Angeles Public Library in the 1960s. It is very un-Adams like in some frames – tilted horizons that, to me, are fairly jarring in their carelessness. Still, the photos have a historical value … a value that he did not understand at the time of...

Maybe Mobile Isn’t New Media …

If you’re a bit of a geek, then Dwight Silverman of the Houston Chronicle is someone you know about – a brilliant blogger who does some podcasting and radio work on the technology front. He has a post up about a guy who thinks there’s a woman (or maybe a man, dressed in drag) in the back of a movie...

Better the Gear Than You

I didn’t do a lot of remote setups, but I can feel for Mark Rebilas as I had a setup destroyed in 1995 at the original Extreme Games. Still, that was nowhere near as dramatic as what happened to his kit recently. And, no, the warranty won’t cover that. Thanks to Mark Hertzberg for the link.

Turns out, good typography makes things easier to read, harder to learn. Who knew?
