Now, Julie Dermansky, a freelance photojournalist who was also in Cairo, delivers her opinion on the risks she takes. I choose to risk my safety to document their story. The fear of being assaulted is not something I carry around with me. I am...

F-stops Math Explained

Warning – this is super geeky. Haje Jan Kemps over at Pixiq.com has a post explaining how the numbers on your aperture ring are calculated. It’s a different method than what I learned years ago, but gets you to about the same place. (Thanks to Lawton Howell for the link.)

Storytelling, Seeing and Moments

Short video on Daniel Milnor. Love this quote: When you see an image, you missed it. You have to be five or ten seconds ahead and anticipate and get it. It’s the one that I missed that will haunt me for months. Storytelling Series: Daniel Milnor from Blurb Books on Vimeo.

Prepping for Disaster

A few weeks behind getting this out, but Steven Farrell of the New York Times put together a post on what he took to cover the events in Cairo. Farrell is shooting video for the Times, so he stripped down his kit so as not to look like a journalist.

Radio Guy Wins White House News Photographers Association’s Photographer of the Year

Who ever would have thought that a radio guy would end up winning one of the top photo competitions? Not me, but it happened – David Gilkey from NPR has been named the White House News Photographers Association’s Photographer of the Year. (Aside: I have had several long conversations with a past president of the WHNPA about the use of...

Lots of information to share in the coming days from that event. But back to the news … Stanley Leary has a post up about moving from snapshots to images that tell stories. He talks about...

Scenes From a Workshop

I’ve been quiet the last few days as I was prepping for our sixth annual weekend workshop, this year up in Habersham County. We’re here, have been for 27 hours now. Things are … good. A lot of learning going on, some crying, some wailing, almost no whining. More to come, but a few images from Friday of people at...
