The Southwestern Photojournalism Conference, March 1-3 in Fort Worth, Texas, has announced their speaker lineup. Some very good people on that list … Love their tag line, too – The conference for those who believe photojournalism to be a calling and the act of bearing witness to be important.

America 101

Over at The New York Times’ Lens blog, Ruth Fremson has a story up on a new book from Arthur Grace. The gallery of images is amazing – a real portrait of who we are. Or were, as the images date back nearly 40 years. I have his first book, Choose Me, which is fantastic. Going to have to order...

If the Gear Was Better, I’d Be Better …

… or, not, as it turns out in a piece on PetaPixel. Every photojournalist I’ve ever met has, at some point, said they would have been a better shooter if they only had some other piece of kit. Now, someone has gone back and challenged that idea by buying all of the gear they used to have and testing it....

Maybe You Can’t Enter That Photo Contest

Michael Zhang at PetaPixel has the explanation on why if you liven Iran, North Korea, Vermont or New Jersey you can’t enter the National Geographic photo contest. LSU Deletes Crosses from Photo of Students

Yeah … not sure what to say about this, but Louisiana State University apparently retouched an image of four students, all painted up, taking out a cross they had on their shoulder. Seems like a state university would be better of not getting into a religious debate.

Inside the FSA Project

Over at LensRentals.com, Roger Cicila has a great history of Roy Stryker’s Farm Securities Administration photo team – one of the best summations I’ve seen, well worth spending some time on. There’s an argument to be made that we need another FSA-like project … if anyone is reading, I am available.

What’s Journalism and What’s Advertising?

The National Press Photographers Association’s Ethics Matters blog takes on the issue of the National Review altering an image from Reuters for their cover. This isn’t the first time this has come up, and it won’t be the last, but I’m thinking I may want to have a talk with my Advertising faculty colleagues about this, see if the ad...
