Faculty Lineup for Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar Announced

The Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar, Nov. 29 – Dec. 1, has posted their faculty lineup and it looks really strong. As usual. I had hoped to do all three days, but it looks like I’ll only make it to Saturday’s speakers. Still a great lineup for one day. And, if you haven’t registered yet, this is the week to do it...

NPPA Launches New Website

The National Press Photographers Association has relaunched their web site, and it looks awesome. Great work by Executive Director Mindy Hutchinson and everyone else who worked on this. Can't wait to dig in deep.

New York Magazine Cover

The cover of the latest New York magazine is pretty stunning. Over at the Poynter Institute, Caitlin Johnston has some background information on how Iwan Baan made the image. But even better is the story at the magazine’s web site, where Baan talks about how he had to find a rental car and a helicopter to make the image. There...

What’s In a Name?

My friend Wasim Ahmad, on the faculty at Stony Brook University, wrote a piece for iMediaEthics about the need for names in photo captions – and this will now be required reading for all of my students. His policy for students is the same as mine – no names, it’s not journalism, it’s not usable. The argument I hear back...

Ahead of the Pack with Ami Vitale

Nice piece on the ABC News site by Deanna Mitchell looking at the work of Ami Vitale and her transition from daily shooter to documentary work. Interesting breakdown of how she spends her time: Vitale approximates 90 percent of her time is spent applying for grants, conducting research and entering contests, “Taking pictures is actually a tiny percentage…so much time...

After Instagram … Again

Kenneth Jarecke takes another run at the Instagram galleries posted by Time magazine … if you thought a day’s reflecting would have tempered his opinion, think again. This one graf struck me: You can put it in historical, pre-digital terms if you like. If Life Magazine asked Henri Cartier-Bresson to shoot a hurricane with a Brownie, what do you think...

Where Are the Great Superstorm Images?

I’ve been asking myself this for the last day, so Kenneth Jarecke’s tirade has some resonance with me. There have been some gems, some great documentary work of what happened and how people reacted to it. But where are the personal stories? Where are the struggles? Where is the journalism? The main part of the storm moved through almost 36...

Bad ‘Shop or Bad Stitch?

Michael Zhang at PetaPixel takes a look at a photo from the Gov. Mitt Romney campaign that has gone horribly wrong. It is possible it’s the worst case of Photoshopping ever, but I’ll lean towards it being a really poor in-camera panorama stitch job. Either way, how did this get released? (Thanks to Mickey Osterreicher for the link.)
