September 29, 2011 Behind E:60 The crew of ESPN’s E:60 show has a Production Notes blog that tells the stories of telling their stories. If you’re interested in sports video storytelling, worth sticking in your RSS reader. Categories Craft/Multimedia/Photojournalism/Tech Talk
September 28, 2011 Fox Hunt, Deconstructed I’m really enjoying this new (to me) site, The Image, Deconstructed. They have an interview up with Andrew Craft where he talks about shooting a Thanksgiving Day fox hunt, gives a nice insight into what it was like. Well worth sticking the RSS feed in your reader. September 23, 2011 Time for Shooting The Image Deconstructed has an interview up with Leah Nash where she talks about a project she’s working on documenting a woman with Aspergers Syndrome, a form of high-functioning autism. Some nice insights into working with folks that exist in a sometimes closed community. (Thanks to Melissa Lyttle for the link.) Categories Journalism/Photojournalism
September 14, 2011 Shooting Baseball Nice piece on the pressure of shooting baseball and transmitting from the field on the Milwaukee Brewers’ web site. It’s different from my days at Fenway Park, shooting for 45 minutes and then running to the darkroom to soup and ship a couple of images, then get back to the field for PMers. Not sure if it’s better or worse... Categories At Work/Photojournalism/Tech Talk
September 14, 2011 On Patience Over at the New York Times’ Lens blog, Kerri MacDonald has a short interview up with Jared Soares where he talks about the impact of one of my favorite images by Sam Abell. I remember studying that photo for hours. I would look at that photo, then I would run off to a country fair and I would try to... September 13, 2011 New Skills for the Modern Storyteller Stanley Leary put up a nice compilation of the skills now being asked for in job descriptions for photographers. To me, there is nothing surprising in the job listings – it’s an evolution that’s been going on for the last decade or so. But the key thing he points out is that, regardless of the skill set, being able to... Categories Advice & Learning/Business & Industry/Photojournalism/Thoughts & Theory
September 12, 2011 Japan, Then and Now I really enjoy these sorts of things … CNN.com has a small gallery of then-and-now images from the areas of Japan that were affected by the tsunami six months ago. There’s been a lot of cleanup, but a lot of those massive ships that were hurled inland are still there. Categories Good Work/Photojournalism
September 10, 2011 Football Workshop We’re in the process of launching a sports journalism initiative within UGA’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication. We’re hiring a couple of folks to teach, research and think about sports, so to get ready, we decided to try out this silly idea my colleague Prof. Jim Biddle and I came up with last spring – let’s take a... September 9, 2011 ACLU: Photographers Rights Good summation from the American Civil Liberties Union on the laws regarding photography. Given the seeming outbreak of issues over the last year or so, maybe this should be required reading of every journalist and law enforcement agent. (Thanks to NPPA President Sean Elliot for the link.) Categories Ethics & Legal/Photojournalism
September 9, 2011 What Did You Do for Labor Day? I, apparently, was a lazy sloth … because, as Michael Koretzky writes on his blog Journoterrorist, he helped lead a journalism workshop inside a homeless shelter down in Florida. Yep. Twenty students from around the country came to town and spent 36 hours inside a homeless shelter, reporting, shooting, writing and designing a 20 page edition of the Homeless Voice....
