Japan, Then and Now

I really enjoy these sorts of things … CNN.com has a small gallery of then-and-now images from the areas of Japan that were affected by the tsunami six months ago. There’s been a lot of cleanup, but a lot of those massive ships that were hurled inland are still there.

Football Workshop

We’re in the process of launching a sports journalism initiative within UGA’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication. We’re hiring a couple of folks to teach, research and think about sports, so to get ready, we decided to try out this silly idea my colleague Prof. Jim Biddle and I came up with last spring – let’s take a...

ACLU: Photographers Rights

Good summation from the American Civil Liberties Union on the laws regarding photography. Given the seeming outbreak of issues over the last year or so, maybe this should be required reading of every journalist and law enforcement agent. (Thanks to NPPA President Sean Elliot for the link.)

What Did You Do for Labor Day?

I, apparently, was a lazy sloth … because, as Michael Koretzky writes on his blog Journoterrorist, he helped lead a journalism workshop inside a homeless shelter down in Florida. Yep. Twenty students from around the country came to town and spent 36 hours inside a homeless shelter, reporting, shooting, writing and designing a 20 page edition of the Homeless Voice....

Ten Years Later

Thomas E. Franklin made one of the iconic images from the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks of three fire fighters raising a flag amidst the rubble of the collapsed World Trade Center. To mark the tenth anniversary of that horrible day, he has put together a short documentary that talks to several of the photojournalists who were there that day....

Finding Your Audience

All of the students in our (recently renamed) Visual Journalism emphasis are required to have a blog set up AND to post to it on a regular basis. Their target audience, though, is me. I read it, I critique it and I comment on it. The hope is that they’re sharing it with others, in which case this post by...

The Next Kitchen Table, er … Newspaper

Nieman Labs has a fascinating video up about the next kitchen table … developed by the New York Times’ R&D Lab. WANT THIS. New York Times R&D Lab: The kitchen table of the Future from Nieman Journalism Lab on Vimeo. I do wish the videographer hadn’t tried to shoot part of this as a vertical, though … lesson learned, I...

And One More iPad App …

The British Journal of Photography, the longest continually published photography magazine, now has a (free) iPad app. Downloading now … Update: Turns out the app is free but the individual issues are a buck a piece. Hrmpf.
