For those crossing over from the pure design side to now having to select the photographic elements, Kathy McInernery on the Society for Newspaper Design site has summed up a presentation by the Denver Post’s Jeff Neumann. Neumann, the lead designer at the Post, in turn posted his presentation on his web site for all to see.
If you will be or are making the transition, it’s time to learn our language. I worked with some fantastic photo editors and designers over the years. I also worked with some who did not understand the visual language or journalistic importance of our images. Don’t be that guy.
One of the most important things Neumann stressed was involving the photographer in the process–a lesson I wish a lot of my former colleagues would have learned.
