November 19, 2013 Rules for Storytelling This can’t be of any value as it’s not a prime-number list, but I’m still sharing – Pixar’s 22 Rules of Storytelling. Not all apply to journalism, but a surprising number do. Categories Advice & Learning/Journalism/Multimedia/Photojournalism/Video
November 18, 2013 Dining With the Tick Tock Crowd I’m feeling a little ashamed … in August, my good friend Mike Roy sent me a link to a film he made for NJ.com on the Tick Tock Diner. I got buried and didn’t watch it until this weekend. It’s about 25 minutes long, so go get your lunch, lean back and spend 24 hours with the people who make... November 18, 2013 Why You May Not Get a Job Over at Time, Martha C. White has a short piece up on why college graduates are struggling to find jobs – and it isn’t that their formal education failed them, it’s the “soft skills” the kids lack. Specifically, companies say candidates are lacking in motivation, interpersonal skills, appearance, punctuality and flexibility. So, to those kids who complain about my attendance... November 18, 2013 User Generated Content! Spot News! UFOs! Yep … Indiana’s WHTR posted a doctored tornado photo that, ahem, included a UFO. Why do we like user generated content so much? (Thanks to David Schick for the link.) Categories Ethics & Legal/Photojournalism
November 18, 2013 Photographer Shot in Paris Newspaper Office NPR is reporting that a photographer’s assistant has been shot inside the offices of Liberation. The BBC is reporting the victim is a 27 year old assistant photographer, who had just arrived to work on a fashion shoot. Police believe it is the same man who broke into the offices of BFMTV on Friday, firing several shots in the lobby. Categories Business & Industry/Photojournalism
November 18, 2013 Don’t Sit on the Fence, Open the Gate The Chicago Tribune’s Alex Garcia has a good read on whether he should start using his Instagram account more, knowing there are copyright issues inherent in that decision. He reiterates a statement I’ve heard a lot in the last few months, that if you want your work to be found then you need to go where everyone else is –... November 17, 2013 Portraits of War I’m a little behind on this, should have posted it last week on Veteran’s Day … but the Washington Post put together a gallery of war photographers with some images and short bios on some of the luminaries in the realm. Categories Good Work/Photojournalism
November 17, 2013 Paying Homage If I ever travel to France, I now know what my favorite news organization will be – Libération last week decided to run empty boxes where photos would have been to show how important photojournalism is to them. Awesome. Categories Business & Industry/Photojournalism
November 14, 2013 A Resurgence of Film? Sometimes, Twitter leads me to strange places … take, for instance, this post by Neil Turner who may (or may not) be lamenting a return to film because it’s more valid. (I may not have this right, go read it for yourself.) There was some head scratching here on the back hallway as I saw these words fall into place:... November 13, 2013 PopPhoto and Ethics I sort of stopped reading the technical photo magazines. It’s not that I didn’t like them, it’s just … well … I already know I’m a geek and I’m not good at controlling that geekyness, so I stopped a few years back. But one column by Stan Horaczek has me thinking I need to support PopPhoto again. Here’s a lesson... Categories Ethics & Legal/Photojournalism/Tech Talk
