“How I Got That Shot of Ayatollah Khomeini”

My admiration for David Burnett is well known, so posting links to his work is an automatic thing at this point. So Slate’s slide show of his work from the Iranian revolution, complete with his commentary, is worth spending a few minutes on. (Thanks to former student Thomas O’Connor for the heads up.)

Get Online and Vote!

National Press Photographers Association members – you know there’s a national election going on right now, correct? Get over to the NPPA web site, log in and cast your ballot. Everything’s different now in how the board is structured, so pay attention to the new plan.

Video Rolls Online

Sorry, bad pun in the headline … but the New York Times‘ Brian Stetler has taken a look at how online advertising is booming – at least, those that are attached to online video. He brings up that video is expensive, but doesn’t go into much detail on why, so let me hit a few points here: Gear is expensive....

“The Three Things You Need”

Michael Johnston over at The Online Photographer has a query up this morning asking what “three things you need to enjoy or participate in photography the way you practice it.” I have my answer – An eye, a heart and hope. To see it, to feel it and to believe you can capture it. What are yours?

An American Soldier

The Denver Post’s Craig Walker spent 27 months documenting the enlistment, training and deployment of Ian FIsher. Great set of images and great, continuing access.

This New is Old. Again.

It is obvious that I am not a fashion conscious person. Some would argue that I am not even fashion aware. That said, here’s a little something from the New York Times about fashion as they explore the “old is new” theme in men’s clothing – apparently, late 19th century menswear is now fashionable. Which, really, we don’t care about...

Don’t Do, Be

Coincidences are wonderful things … after class wrapped up yesterday, two students hung around to return some gear and ask a few questions. Not about class, about what comes after class. One is graduating in a few weeks and had an idea on what she wanted to do – six month internship, then grad school in the fall. A month...

We Need to Increase Online Profits! Cut the Video!

Seems insane, but it’s what’s happening – as newsrooms trim to save dollars, they let a lot of strong multimedia journalists go. Or, worse, they make weak multimedia folks to mainstream stories. It takes skill, it takes talent and it takes time to tell a story well in video – and if you’ve never done it, you just don’t know...

Goodbye to Google

Or so insinuates Rupert Murdoch, who claims he’ll start blocking Google from indexing his paper’s web sites. Why? Because he thinks they’re stealing revenue – and we all know how much revenue there is to be stolen. (Hint: Not much.) He has a point – if all you’re going to read is the first few grafs of a story, and...

Jargon

In prepping the above post, I came across this list of newspaper jargon on the Detroit Free Press‘ site. If you can’t define all of these things, you’re not a newspaper person … if you can, you’re probably an old newspaper person.
