Building a Digital Presence

We had our annual Grady College Career Day earlier this week and I wanted to sit in on a lot of the things Cecil Bentley had organized, but this pesky job got in the way. Thankfully, my colleague Prof. Karen Russell put together a post about what she heard at the panel she moderated on using social media to find...

Getting Raving Fans

You want your business to succeed? Then you don’t need customers or clients, you need Raving Fans. Our friend Stanley Leary has a post up today about the concept and how he’s executing it. Worth devoting some cellular activity to.

Canon.canon?

Over at PetaPixel.com, Michael Zhang writes today that Canon has openly stated they want want to register the generic top level domain “.canon”. (Generic top level domains are the .com, .net, .org, etc, found in URLs.) Which is … well … fine? I guess. Maybe. Zhang does ask whether a .canon address will be easier or harder to remember than...

Preparing to Succeed

Wow, that sounds like a really bad airport hotel seminar, doesn’t it? But success does take preparation. You can wish to be lucky all your life, but it probably isn’t going to happen. (“But have you noticed how that luck happens to the same photographers over and over again?” Edward Steichen) Over on the Luminous Landscape site, Jack Graham talks...

Systemic vs. Episodic News Consumption

In my editing days I would often get into conflicts with one of my managing editors over the importance of special projects. He had reached a point in his career where advancement was going to be determined by the number of awards his staff won, so Big Special Sunday projects were important to him. Me, I thought some good came...

North Carolina State’s Paper Might Fold

If no editor is found soon, the 90-year-old Technician could be at the end of its run. The story hints that changes in the industry could be driving students away from journalism, but given the full classes and high demand we’re experiencing here at the University of Georgia, I suspect it’s something else.
