Pitch a Story, Get a Mentor, Earn a Little Cash

UPIU has a second iteration of their journalism contest online now and it’s a pretty good concept now. Here’s the basics … they’re looking for stories on the topic of energy. You write a short pitch, send it in and, if they like it, assign you a mentor to help guide you through the process. There’s a little cash to...

Final Cut for the Masses?

There has been a lot of debate on the net since Apple did a sneak peek of the next generation of their pro-level non-linear editing software, Final Cut Pro X. Now, it’s in the wild and, while the debate is still ongoing, there’s one thing that’s a winner – the price. Final Cut Pro X is $300. You can add...

No Rhythm for Jackson in Norway

(Welcome back – you missed the puns, didn’t you?) In a stunningly good show of solidarity, photographers covering Janet Jackson’s Oslo, Norway, show all boycotted it, refusing to sign the onerous contract they were presented with upon arrival. These contracts have been around for the last dozen or so years, but this one was particularly bad – including the stipulation...

Still Questioning Photos at the Los Angeles Times

It has been eight years since Brian Walski shipped a composite photo to his editors at the Los Angeles Times, but readers still occasionally question images that they publish. Happy to see Deputy Director of Photography Steve Stroud answering these questions directly – the images in question appear to be clean.

The Vancouver Kiss

Richard Lam talks about one of the most widely distributed images after the Vancouver riots this week. if you check the notes at the end, there may be more to this story than what you first read from the image. NOTE: As an FYI, I am on the road for the next few days, posting will be light.

Cops and Cameras in Miami Beach

The Miami Herald has a story up looking at the history of police officers and people with cameras. It’s an interesting read and refreshing to hear that the police chief has put some training programs in place to educate his officers. (Thanks to NPPA President Sean Elliot for the lede.)

Nice Try … But, No

I wrote about this a while back. Two newspapers, the Las Vegas Review-Journal and the Denver Post, had entered into an agreement with a company called Righthaven LLC, giving them the authority to go after copyright violators. In principal, not a bad idea – copyright violations are rampant online and news organizations need to protect what they have created. Hard...

Moving Buildings

Outside of photojournalism … sort of … maybe … okay, no – there are stories in here. David W. Dunlop at The New York Times’ Lens blog has a post up about Norman McGrath, an architectural photographer who is doing a talk tonight (Wednesday, June 15) in New York City about his work. In looking through the small gallery of...

Need to Read: Why Photographs Work

Spotted this in a book store, but was rushing too much and didn’t grab it, but based on this review at the Luminious Landscape, I’m going to go get George Barr’s Why Photographs Work. It’s not about photojournalism, it’s about imaging and understanding why some frames resonate and some do not. Will keep you posted …
