Hyperlocal blog post here … at 4 p.m. today, Monday, October 24, I’ll be participating in a panel discussion titled What’s News to Students? We’ll be in the Miller Learning Center on the University of Georgia Campus, room 248. My colleague from Grady, Prof. Horace Newcomb, will moderate the panel which will also include Prof. Steve Smith, the Athens Banner-Herald’s...

The Sunday Storytelling Slide

If you’re reading this soon after posting, it’s Sunday morning. Maybe you’ve got your coffee going and are padding your slippered feet out the driveway to grab your Sunday paper. Photoshop’s Next Possible Feature: Image Deblurring

At Adobe’s 2011 Sneak Peek conference, they showed a possible future feature for Photoshop – a deblurring algorithm. It’s … well … stunning. In concept, it analyzes an image that is not sharp due to motion (not focus) (yet) and then corrects for the motion pattern it has sensed. They run through three different images in the demo posted above....

The Ethics of Picture Editing

We spend a lot of time talking about the ethics of photojournalists in the field and in front of the computer screen. Did they manipulate the scene? The image? But there’s a whole other layer of the journalism process where ethics come into play – the editing phase. Over at Salon.com, Justin Elliot takes a look at a front page...
