Multimedia Training at UC Berkley

If I had the time (and wasn’t already overbooked), I definitely want to go to this … The Knight Digital Media Center (KDMC) at UC Berkeley just wanted to let everyone know that the application period is still open for our July Multimedia Workshop. In case you’re not familiar with our program, we offer free week-long training to working journalists....

No More Reenactments at the White House

The buzz generated from a blog post by Reuters’ Jason Reed two weeks ago was stunning – individuals and organizations across the country came out against the idea of shooting reenactments of presidential speeches, a practice that has gone on since at least the Truman administration. Now, according to an Associated Press story, the White House has said they will...

It’s the Image, Not the Effort

Over at The Online Photographer, Ctein has a minor treatise up on why it’s the final image that matters, not the effort you put into it. This is something students grapple with quite a bit – they work really hard and then fall in love with the result because of the effort they put into it. But a viewer doesn’t...

Chromebook Subscriptions Announced

Engadget has a story up about Google’s Chromebook and the various subscription models for it. (Yep, you can buy it or you can lease it for three years.) Quick primer, for those who haven’t followed along: Google has created Chrome OS – an operating system (what Windows and Mac OS X are) and partnered with some hardware companies to produce...

You don’t know her name, but you know her face – she’s the five year old girl Chris Hondros photographer in 2005 after her parents were killed by American troops. Now, the New York Times has gone back and found her, talking with her about that night and telling us what her life is now like. It’s a heart breaking...

Copyright Shakedowns

Dan Frosch at the New York Times has a great article about a Nevada company that is going after copyright violators very, very aggressively. The company, Righthaven, is picking up the copyrights to work from a couple of news organizations and then scouring the web looking for illegal usage of those images and stories. Without warning, they are filing lawsuits...

Jon Stewart on Releasing the bin Laden Photos

To excerpt: Maybe we should always show pictures – Bin Laden, pictures of our wounded service people, pictures of maimed innocent civilians. We can only make decisions about war if we see what war actually is and not as a video game where bodies quickly disappear leaving behind a shiny gold coin. Worth watching this to the end.

Changing History

With the news last week that Osama bin Laden had been killed in Pakistan, history was made. President Obama’s photographer, Pete Souza, was in the White House situation room as the president and numerous other high level officials watched the attack on bin Laden’s compound. Souza’s photo was made available the following day and has been heralded as an historic...

A Victory

In the war against photos of reenactments, the first victory goes to MSNBC.com who now says they will not run faked photos anymore. Having been prompted to think about this issue this week, our point of view is that there’s no reason for us to show pictures of a re-enactment when we can show you screen grabs of the actual...
