Infografing the 100 Meter

The New York Times has one of the most amazing infographics up I’ve ever seen comparing the speeds of more than 100 Olympic 100 meter races. This? THIS IS WHY THE INTERNET ROCKS. There’s no way to do that on a printed page. Hats off to Kevin Quealy and Graham Roberts. (And “infografing” is totally a word. Now.)

Estrin and Harvey on Being Seen

Over at Burn Magazine, two of my favorite people have a long, rambling and slightly bizarre conversation as David Alan Harvey interviews James aestrin from The New York Times. One of my favorite comments from Estrin: I believe that, on a personal level – not a professional level as a journalist of the New York Times, but on a personal...

Olympic Ruins

The New York Times’ Lens blog has a post up looking at the work of Jamie McGregor Smith who spend time in Athens, Greece, looking at the remains of the 2004 Olympic venues. “Remains” is the proper word – many of the sites, custom built for the games just eight years ago, are sitting unused and rotting away. Study the...

One For the Dogs

This is pretty far outside of journalism, but The New York Times has a video up about William Wegman, who has become famous for his photos of his dogs. It includes some of his photographs, but I'm also intrigued by the art work he is doing with postcards. If I could paint, I'd love to try that. And I really...

When Photographers Don’t Help

The Guardian has a fantastic collection of anecdotes up from photographers who, in conflict situations, decided to shoot and not help. Every photojournalist has to read through this set – it’s heart breaking and insightful. From Magnum’s Ian Berry: When you’re working with a camera, you tend to disassociate yourself from what’s going on. You’re just an observer. We were...

The Irregular Olympian

You could pretty easily accuse me of being a David Burnett-fanboy. I would be okay with that. Over at The New York Times’ Lens blog, James Estrin talked with Burnett about heading off to cover his eighth Olympics. I have a lot of friends and colleagues who are headed across the pond and they’re all going to do great work....
