Cameras on the Course

A little behind on this one … ESPN has a story, with video*, up about cell phone cameras on the course and how that may have contributed to one player withdrawing from an event last month.

If you’ve ever covered golf as a professional, you know the rule of etiquette is you don’t fire your camera until the player has made contact with the ball. It’s a delicate balance, getting the timing just right on that. (It also makes me laugh whenever I see footage from inside an operating room and the surgeon has music playing … because, apparently, hitting a golf ball is more difficult than brain surgery.)

* As for the video, this is a classic example of why you shouldn’t shoot video on autoexposure – look at the way the camera is chasing the exposure, lightening and darkening the image at random intervals.
