New Tuition Grants Available For NPPA Events
Authors Coalition Funds Being Used For Educational GrantsDURHAM, NC (February 8, 2010) – Applications are now being accepted for tuition grants for the line-up of 2010 educational events produced by the National Press Photographers Association, NPPA executive director Jim Straight announced today.
NPPA reported earlier that it had received funds from the Authors Coalition of America (ACA) as a result of joining the organization, and as part of NPPA’s plan to use ACA funds the NPPA board of directors recently approved the funding of tuition grants to the organization’s 2010 programs..
The tuition grants are open to all photographers who earn their livings primarily by making photographs intended for publication and whose work is commercially distributed outside the United States, whether or not they are NPPA members, Straight said.
As defined by ACA standards, if the photographers’ work is “reasonably capable of being photocopied abroad and is not self-published, or whose work, if self-published has no fewer than 1,000 copies sold, is commercially distributed outside the United States and is reasonably capable of being photocopied abroad,” then the photographers are eligible to apply for one of NPPA’s tuition grants.
“These tuition grants cover the cost of the registration fees only,” Straight explained. “Travel grants are available, but they are to be applied for separately.”
NPPA’s executive director said that tuition grants will be available for the following 2010 NPPA educational events:
- Northern Short Course, New Brunswick, NJ, March 11 – 13 (20 grants available)
- News Video Workshop, Norman, OK, March 14 – 19 (10 grants available)
- Advanced Storytelling Workshop, San Marcos, TX, April 11 – 16 (5 grants available)
- Multimedia Immersion, Syracuse, NY, May 18 – 22 (5 grants available)
- Convergence, SC or GA, July TBA (40 grants available)
“NPPA will give first consideration to those applications who demonstrate they have been adversely affected by the economic collapse within the media industry,” Straight said today. “If this applies to you, please include with your application a description of your situation and any corroborating information (such as a notice of layoff, contact information for your former employer, cancelled freelance assignments, etc.).”
Applications for the Northern Short Course and NewsVideo Workshop must be received by February 23, 2010. Applications for all the other events must be received by March 11, 2010.
To apply for one of these tuition grants, send an eMail to grants@nppa.org with the eMail’s subject line “Tuition Grant” followed by the name of the workshop you’re applying for. (Example: “Tuition Grant – NewsVideo Workshop”).
To be considered for a grant, applicants should include the following:
- The event you are applying for
- Name, address, phone number, eMail
- Employment history and statement that you qualify using the ACA criteria described above
- Short description of how furthering your education will help you as a professional
- Demonstration of hardship as outlined above (if applicable)
- And whether you will be able to use a tuition grant even if you have to pay your own travel
“If you would like to also apply for a travel grant please include that in your eMail along with an estimate of your travel expenses,” Straight said. “Travel grants will be decided on a case-by-case basis and will be applied differently to each applicant. In order to properly account for these funds the NPPA will require you to spend your own money up front and submit expenses and receipts for reimbursement after you have returned from your trip to the educational event.”
