South African Photojournalist Reportedly Killed in Libya

Libya is rapidly turning into one of the most dangerous places for journalists, particularly photojournalists. The New York Times is reporting that it appears South African photojournalist Anton Hammerl was killed on April 5.

In a statement posted Thursday night on a Facebook page dedicated to Mr. Hammerl’s memory, his family criticized how the Libyan government had treated them.

“From the moment Anton disappeared in Libya we have lived in hope as the Libyan officials assured us that they had Anton,” the statement said. “It is intolerably cruel that Gaddafi loyalists have known Anton’s fate all along and chose to cover it up.”
