He’s big, he has a big heart and he has a big passion for community journalism. He’s the legendary Dave Labelle, and he’ll be make a big presentation next week at Grady College.

Labelle is the author of what is arguably the greatest community journalism book ever – The Great Picture Hunt, a book that explores enterprise photography through community understanding and immersion. He has worked as a photojournalist, photo editor and professor across the country and his books are lauded as seminal works in the field. His latest, I Don’t Want to Know the All Technical Stuff, I Just Want to Shoot Pictures, along with the second edition of The Great Picture Hunt explore and explain the whys of photography and photojournalism with a conversational style that belies the depth of information.

Taking on a completely different tone, Lessons in Life and Death discusses the ethics of covering grief and sorrow and has been used as a training manual for grief counsellors.

Labelle will be speaking to the Advanced Photojournalism class at the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, December 1. The talk, which will be in room 130 and open to the community, will be followed by a book signing. This is the inaugural speaker event for the UGA National Press Photographers Association Student Chapter.

  1. I love the students at UGA and am looking forward to this “homecoming of sorts.” Mark is a wonderful teacher and one of my heroes. P.S. Clear is also looking forward to the visit.

  2. The only thing more amazing than Dave’s work is Dave himself. You don’t have to be a photojournalist or even a journalist to be inspired by this man and his work; anyone interested in learning more about the world through photos and the stories they tell has much to learn from hearing him speak.

Dave, it was wonderful to meet you the last time you were at UGA and I can’t wait to attend your talk on Tuesday. Our students are privileged to have you back again.

  3. “Lessons in Life and Death” is one of the most important books that’s been written by a photojournalist. Sometimes it’s difficult to express why we photograph what’s painful. Our audiences often wonder how in the world we can photograph some of the subjects we do. “Where is your humanity?” people ask. But this book addresses the importance of motivation and approach, and the importance of balance, in both the way we portray the human condition and in our own personal lives. It’s an deeply personal account and articulates what most of us have felt but couldn’t quite explain. I think it’s out of print, but get it, if you can.

During an NPPA Flying Short Course I attended in Pittsburgh many years ago, Dave gave a presentation that stressed something very important. We journalists use the term “passion” an awful lot. But, like Dave said back then, a serial killer can be passionate about what he does. What’s most important com-passion. Compassion for our fellow human beings is what gives us the strength to do the hard parts of our jobs. And compassion is where we find the joy. And there’s never been a photojournalists with more compassion than Dave LaBelle.

So, UGa PJ students, prepare to be awed and inspired. Wish I was among your ranks Tuesday.

  4. My daughter’s life has been changed forever by Dave’s love of quality photojournalism and his passion for mentoring youth. We love him and encourage any photographer to embrace his teachings. He always teaches more than one expects!!! Incredible photographer, mentor and teacher. Thank you, Dave, for sharing yourself with others.
