Smartphone as Movie Studio

The BBC decided to try and make a short film using just a smartphone, some apps and a handful of accessories. In addition to posting the resulting movie, they also put up a video about the making of it that talks about all the tech stuff. Kind of cool … (Thanks to Mindy McAdams for the link.)

Handout Photos and Flying Liars

Magic Hour App

Okay, this is uber-geeky … Elfinda Apps has a free app for iOS called Magic Hour that takes your current location and tells you when the photographic “magic hour” will be. You can even set it up to give you a heads-up when you’re coming close to the times of day when the light will be best. Cost? Free. (Thanks...

A Black and White Leica?

Well, LeicaRumors.com believes that an upcoming Leica announcement will be for a black-and-white chipped rangefinder camera. Now, be aware, that all digital sensors are monochromatic – the Bayer pattern array of colored filters, combined with post-processing, gets you actual color. And while there have been some black-and-white, modern digital cameras out there, there haven’t been that many. So … I...

BANG!!

Again, head into the desktop. This time, Nieman Reports has let Mike Pride, the (to me, thankfully) former editor of the Concord Monitor prattle on about how he would change the news organization if he were in charge again. The changes I’d make to the photography department would be similar to the ones in sports. The Monitor has a fine...
