David Guttenfelder’s Visual Variety

I talk with my students – constantly – about visual variety. About finding different ways of showing a story, about giving their readers a different perspective on the story at hand. We also talk about how it helps page designers – not having four medium shots from three stories makes the page look a lot better.

Over the years, I’ve worked with a lot of great photojournalists. But it wasn’t until I took a look at a collection of David Guttenfelder’s work, as collected by the Denver Post, did I realize how well he represents my portfolio ideals. Long shots, medium shots, details … everything you could want is in there, somewhere. Great light, great moments, great stories … great images.
